Welcome to Temple Israel of the Poconos.

Temple Israel of the Poconos traces its history back to Yom Kippur 1919, when nine men met at Louis Nadelman's Main Street home to conduct the first religious service of the Jewish congregation. Two weeks later, Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Abeloff opened their home for Succot Festival services with Torahs borrowed from Congregation B'nai Abraham in Easton.

From that time until today, Temple Israel is proud to be known as "The Jewish Address of the Poconos."

We welcome and encourage interreligious families and people of all backgrounds to join and participate in our programs.  As a conservative affiliated congregation, we follow the principle of matrilineal descent.  We work closely with each family, helping introduce them to the tenets of basic Judaism.  We offer courses in basic Judaism and more, for anyone wishing to learn more about our traditions.  We will work with individuals interested in becoming Jews by choice and the conversion of children.

Currently the member affiliations is $250.00 per Jewish member.  Our policy is that no one should be left out of membership because of finances. Temple Israel of the Poconos is committed to providing a center for Jewish life and education for all members of the community.

Listen to Charlie Cahn and the elders talk about their year’s growing up at Temple Israel.
